just another landscape? Franz Josef glacier
this is a very special experience: heli-hiking to the Franz Josef glacier
means: you'll go on top of the glacier by helicopter and there you walk for 2 hours on the glacier with cramps on your feet.
How do we imagine the surface of a glacier - flat and wet? It is not that flat ... here are some pictures

the black spot in the middle of the glacier is an icefall.
The helicopter landed just beneath of it for in this place the surface is quite horizontal.
Franz Josef is a fast glacier - it's flow rate is about 1/2 m per day.
So the ice is pushed over the rim of the fall - and breaks down from time to time. The noises of crushing ice on it's way down are thrilling ... or may I say terrifiing?

... not flat ... the icepeaks are impressive - several meters high. And there are also holes and cracks - several meters deep.
finding our way through mountains and valleys ...
... and through gaps.
We got quite wet
just another landscape?
